    Mattress Shopping Overview

I bought a cheap mattress 7 years ago from a mattress store in my neighborhood. For $400 I got a hard, springy mattress and a box spring. It was terrible, but I got used to it. I only recently realized how uncomfortable I had been. When I started looking for a new bed, I realized that buying a mattress has completely changed since the last time I purchased. Nobody goes down the street to buy their mattress anymore, they buy beds online because it’s easy, risk-free (meaning that you’re never stuck with a mattress that isn’t comfortable) and the beds are AMAZINGLY comfortable.

How to Tell if Your Mattress Needs Replacing

I’m a stomach sleeper so I prefer to sleep on hard or at least generally firm surface. So a hard mattress isn’t a problem for me generally, but when I started feeling individual springs, I new it was time for a new bed. Here are the questions I had to HONESTLY answer for myself:

Did I have energy in the morning?

Did I fall asleep quickly and deeply?

Was I waking up with shoulder or back pain?

    Were my allergies getting worse?

I answered all of these questions with a big “Yes”, so I knew it was time to start shopping for a new bed.

    Where to Start

Here’s the big question, and you’ll need to be honest with yourself again. Can you really see yourself buying a mattress online? The hurdle most people face is buying a mattress that they haven’t been able to test drive, which is perfectly understandable. If you’re on the fence, here are a few reasons you should consider buying your next mattress online.

Fortune Favors the Bold: Why Buy a Mattress Online

    Low Risk

Most people think that they’re stuck with the first mattress they try, but this is totally untrue. Most reputable online mattress retailers (and all of the mattresses we reviewed) have a generous return policy for their products, and some are good for up to a year.

Also, consumers have spoken, over 90% of people who buy a mattress online are satisfied with their purchase, which is actually higher than the satisfaction rate of people who shop in stores. Only 87% of people who buy their mattresses in stores are ultimately satisfied with their purchase. What does that mean? It means that shopping for mattresses online is here to stay.

    Low Cost

The rent for that mattress store down the street is expensive. So are the salaries of their sales teams. When mattress makers can avoid these expenses and sell directly to you through an online store, everybody wins. You can get a better bed for less by shopping online. To sum it up, your dollar goes further when you shop for a bed online.

    More Options

Materials in bed mattress construction have improved dramatically over the last few years. Where once the only mattress-in-a-box was made of memory foam (think Temperpedic), a wave of new companies have sprung up and have been designing incredible beds with other materials that can improve the sleep experience even if you hate memory foam beds and prefer bouncy springs. These materials include latex foams, variable density memory foams, variations on the traditional spring mattress, and countless combinations of all the above.

Foam mattresses were once the only good options for people who slept on their side or on their back, while everyone else complained about their limbs falling asleep overnight. This is a problem that has been solved, and choosing the right materials and brand can ensure that everyone gets the best night’s sleep of their life for a fraction of the cost.

Know How You Sleep (And Other Uses for Your Bed)

The first thing you need to determine is how you and your partner sleep. This is perhaps the biggest consideration you’ll need to make in picking your mattress. Sleep face down? Sleep upside down? Sleep in every possible position throughout the course of an average night? That’s totally fine, there’s an online mattress that will not only work for you, but quickly become the best purchase decision of your life. Your job is to figure out your needs and this guide will help get you into the right bed.

In addition to sleep, we use our mattress for um… other things. Subtle enough? If not I’ll get more specific. Many people find that a traditional memory foam mattress do not provide enough bounce for people who use their mattress for sex, while others prefer to sink into their mattress and enjoy the fact that their mattress is quieter and less bouncy. If you prefer a bouncier bed during sex, consider a latex foam mattress. These are generally firmer, but also have a springier feel than memory foam.

Here’s a breakdown of the different materials and how they match with sleep styles.

Sleep on your side? Consider a spring or hybrid mattress.

Sleep on your back? Try a mattress with more support, like memory foam or latex. These tend to be firmer.

Sleep on your stomach? Try a firmer mattress, I prefer latex but a firmer memory foam is good too, as long as you don’t sink in too much. Heavier sleepers may prefer a hybrid or spring mattress.

Change positions frequently? A mattress that minimizes motion transfer like memory foam or latex would be a good fit for you and your partner.

    Online Mattress Types and Materials

When you buy a mattress online, you’ll run into different makes and materials that include:

Foam. Today’s foam mattresses are a lot different from your traditional memory foam. Most materials now offer special cooling and comfort features to reduce heat and those extreme body indents characteristic of older foams. Foam ranges in densities, but if you’re heavier or sleep on your stomach, you may prefer a denser foam.

Hybrid. A hybrid mattress typically comprises a combination of foam layers and even coils to offer the best of all worlds.

Latex. Latex mattresses are similar to foam, but have some very beneficial qualities. First, they’re bouncier and don’t sink in the way a traditional memory foam mattress would. Also, they are more environmentally friendly than many other types of foam because latex is a natural material.

Spring. Spring mattresses are considered the “traditional” mattress type and contain metal coils sandwiched in between layers of other materials added for comfort. There are some great online options for spring mattresses with innovative materials.

Pros and Cons of Different Materials:

    Foam

    Reduces motion transfer

    Contours to your body

Can retain heat and “sleep hot”

    Hybrid

Provides the benefits of both foam and coils

Can be a solid choice for a wide range of sleep positions

    Typically on the pricey side

    Latex

    Environmentally responsible materials and process

    Durable

Can be on the firm side

    Spring

    Can be very supportive

    Tends to stay cool

Uneven support across different areas of your body

    Noisy

Transfer motion from one side to the other

    Safe Buying

Know your must-haves. What’s the most important feature for you — is it staying within a budget? How about comfort or durability? Know what you absolutely can’t sacrifice, then mold your decision around these answers.

Compare shipping and return policies. Trial periods vary by brand, so learn how long you have to sleep on your mattress before giving it the green light. Shipping costs also vary, especially if you live in Alaska, Hawaii or Canada.

Get in touch with support. How quickly did you get help? Were reps able to answer your questions? Were they friendly? Answers can really matter down the road if you need help, want to make a warranty claim or require a return.

    Where to go from here

We’ve done the heavy lifting by rating some of the best options available. Check out our top picks and reviews of our favorites for every type of sleeper. Do your research, pull in customer reviews, consumer reports, everything! Being comfortable with the company is the first step towards being comfortable on a new bed.

    Final Thoughts.

It’s a great time to be alive. And an even better time to be asleep. Online mattress shopping has dramatically improved the lives of millions of Americans by reducing mattress costs, improving sleep with better informed sleep science, and removing the hassle of dealing with mattress stores and salespeople.

  • Rent-To-Own Guide

Anyone tired of paying rent should consider renting-to-own as a path to home ownership. Would renting to own work for you?

    Rent-To-Own Overview

Renting to own agreements are becoming more popular as home prices rise and ownership becomes more difficult.

These properties can benefit some people, but there are also scams that you need to be wary of.

    View rent-to-own listings near you.

    How rent to own works

Rent-to-own arrangements are difficult to explain simply, but they are very similar to a lease. The biggest difference is that rent-to-own agreements contain “option-to-buy” clauses that outline the terms of your purchase of the home when the lease ends.

After you sign, you’ll pay a certain premium on top of your monthly rent. The extra money is saved for your down payment, generally in some form of escrow account.

    Browse MyRentToOwn listings.

    Things to look out for:

    • Obligation-to-buy: These might give you a better deal, but it’s also a considerable risk to you if there’s a chance you won’t be able to make your down payment or qualify for a mortgage at the end of your lease term.
    • Falling prices: If your home’s value rises during your lease term, the price you agreed upon up front will seem like a steal. But if the prices fall, you’ll be locked into a bad deal.

    Should you rent to own?

If you’re having a hard time saving for a down payment, or if credit issues are holding you back, a rent-to-own arrangement may help you reach your home ownership goals, and possibly get you there sooner.

    Check Your Credit

If you’re not sure if you can qualify for a mortgage by the end of your lease term, you should stay away from rent to own. There’s too great of a risk that you’ll lose the premiums you’ve saved for the down payment.

However, if you’re confident in the price of the home rising over the next few years, or are willing to put in sweat equity to raise the value yourself, you may benefit from locking in a lower price for the home.

Check out rent-to-own properties near you.

    Beware of Scams

There are many scams that seek to take advantage of people trying to buy their first home, the tips below can help you avoid them.

    • Beware of below-market-value deals. Rent-t0-own opportunities involve paying additional premiums on top of monthly rent, so anything below market is suspicious.
    • Check the house out carefully. Use an inspector and make sure that the home’s mortgage is paid and the property taxes are up-to-date.
    • Like any other online scams, never give your information away prior to seeing the house and meeting the seller. Also, never give anyone any deposits or down payments before meeting them.
    • Have an attorney look over any documents provided by whoever you’re working with.

    Final Thoughts

Renting-to-own can be a great path to ownership, but it comes with it’s own set of opportunities and risks different from what most renters or home buyers face. Consider your unique situation before browsing rent-to-own listings in your neighborhood.

    Refinancing Overview

Refinancing your home means shopping for a new loan with better terms than the loan you already have. If and when you’re approved for the new loan, your old loan will be paid off completely, and your future payments will be made to your new lender.

Refinancing a mortgage can potentially save a home owner thousands on a home loan, but it’s not always that simple. Interest rates, closing costs, how long you plan to stay in your home, and why you’d like to refinance are all important considerations that we’ll discuss below before listing our top refinancing partner picks for 2019.

    Refinance Strategy Guide

    Five Reasons to Consider Refinancing

    1. Lower Your Monthly Payment

If current interest rates are lower than the rate you are paying on your mortgage, refinancing could lower your monthly payment. For example, if you have $150,000 remaining on your mortgage at 7% for 30 years, your monthly payment (principal and interest) would be around $998. But, if you refinanced to a 5% loan for 30 years, you would pay $808 and save nearly $100 per month over the course of your loan.

However, there are closing costs involved with a new loan. So be sure to factor those into the your equation. If it costs $1000 to finance the loan above, it would only make sense to refinance if you plan on staying in your home for more than 11 months, because 10 months of saving nearly $100 per month would pay off the closing costs involved with setting up the new loan.

    2. Switch to a Short-term Loan

It might also make sense to switch from a 30 year to a 15 year mortgage. This would substantially lower most interest rates, thought the payment would likely be higher.

    3. Change from an Adjustable-rate to a Fixed-rate Mortgage

Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) are great for minimizing your monthly mortgage payment in the early years of owning a home. But when interest rates start to rise, so do the monthly payments on an ARM. To avoid the increasing payments, you can switch to a fixed-rate mortgage. While the monthly payments on a fixed-rate mortgage may initially be higher than the payment on your ARM, you will have peace of mind knowing your payment will remain the same, even if interest rates continue to rise.

    4. Change from a Fixed-rate to an Adjustable-rate Mortgage

Sometimes it makes sense to switch from a 30-year loan to a one with a shorter term. For example, if you know you will be selling your house in the next few years, switching to an adjustable-rate mortgage could lower your rate and your monthly payment until you sell your house. Another example is when short-term rates are lower than long-term rates, and refinancing into an ARM would save you money at least during the fixed-rate period.

    5. Take Cash Out of Your Home Equity

When you have equity in your home, cash out refinancing allows you to turn that equity into cash. There are several providers of cash out refinancing that our team recommends.

    Is Now the Right Time?

Many finance specialists will tell you that refinancing makes sense if the interest rate drops by .5%. But that’s not necessarily true for everyone. If your closing costs are high, or you plan on moving sometime soon before you can recoup the closing costs, you may need to wait for a bigger drop in the interest rate, or a deal with lower closing costs, before refinancing makes good financial sense.

If you need cash now for one or more of the following reasons, you may consider a home equity loan or a cash out refinance.

    ✓ Making home improvements
    ✓ Purchasing an investment property
    ✓ Paying for a child’s education
✓ Paying off credit cards, medical bills or other higher interest debt

    Home Mortgage Guide:

    Home Mortgage Overview

Let’s face it, home ownership is the American dream. But the median listing price for homes on the market at over $250,000, according to Zillow, so most homebuyers need to finance their purchase with a mortgage instead of paying cash.

But finding the right mortgage can be just as important as finding the right house! Getting the right terms, the right rate, the right features, and the right broker can save you time, money, and stress.

This guide explains how mortgages work, the basics of mortgage fees and the mortgage process, and the different types of loans available. You’ll get an overview of the top mortgage lenders in the United States so you can find the best deal for your loan.

    How Home Mortgages Work

A mortgage is a secured loan with your home as collateral, so the lender actually owns your home until you’ve paid them all of the money for it. You will make payments on the loan each month, which includes interest, until it is paid off. After you pay off the mortgage, the lender will give you the title to the property, and you’ll finally be the outright owner of your home.

When you choose a mortgage, you have four major decisions to make: the lender, loan type, loan term and interest rate type.

    Types of Mortgage Loans

The first decision you’ll have to make is which type of mortgage to get. There are two major types of mortgage loans: conventional and government-backed.

Conventional loans do not offer the same guarantees but often have lower interest rates, because better borrowers typically get better rates. Features:

    • Not guaranteed by any government
    • Contract between homebuyer and private lender
    • Requires a down payment from 5 to 20%
    • Requires insurance if paying less than a 20% down payment

Government-backed mortgage programs allow lenders to offer mortgages to people who would not otherwise qualify for them by guaranteeing the mortgage. This reduces the amount of risk the lender is exposed to. Examples of government-backed mortgage programs include:

    • Basic Home Mortgage Loan 203(b) government-insured mortgage program
    • FHA 203(k) Rehabilitation Mortgage Insurance program
    • The Veterans Affairs Purchase Loan program (VA Loans)
    • USDA Single Family Housing Guaranteed Loan Program
    • State and local mortgage programs

    Mortgage Basics

There are a few things you should know about mortgages before continuing with your research.

    • Interest Rates
    • Closing costs
    • Products
    • Customer satisfaction
    • Missing Payments

Interest Rates: Lenders charge different interest rates, so it pays to shop around. Over the lifetime of a loan, a small difference in interest rate can add up to big money. Fixed interest rates are closely competitive, but there can be big variations between fixed-rate loan offerings.

Closing costs: There are a number of costs to keep in mind when you purchase your home. These include application fees, appraisal, and loan origination fees. So it’s important to see what these are, and factor them into whether the loan with the lowest interest rate really is the best deal.

Products: Mortgage products most often refer to the different terms (time you agree to pay back the mortgage) these include 15, 20 and 30 year mortgages with fixed or adjustable interest rates. Adjustable-rate mortgages have additional variation because of how often the rate can change and by how much. Some lenders offer government backed programs you may qualify for, so if you want a FHA, VA or USDA loan, find out which lenders participate.

Customer Satisfaction: One of the biggest mistakes homebuyers make is to choose a home mortgage lender based solely on rates and prices. Customer service should be considered, as you may be dealing with the company for years.

Missing Payments: The most important thing to do when you can’t pay your mortgage is to act fast. There are many programs available since the financial crisis that can help homeowners stay in their homes through tough economic patches. Make sure you are communicative and honest about your situation, and lean on trusted advisors.

    How to Get a Mortgage

Buying a home is one of the largest purchases you’ll likely make, so do your homework and make sure you’re ready. Start by reviewing your bank accounts and billing statements to get a handle on how much money you’re making and spending each month. If you’re planning to buy a house with someone else (like your spouse), review their finances as well, and then ask yourself some questions:

    • Do you have a stable income/job?
    • Are you able to put away some money each month into a savings account?
    • Do you have a plan for managing debt, like student loans and car payments?
    • Do you typically pay your credit card debt quickly? Keeping your credit debt low will help you qualify for a better mortgage.
    • Do you have some money already saved up for emergencies? A good rule of thumb is having three months of income saved.
    • Do you have some money saved up for a down payment and closing costs? You should avoid using your emergency savings for this, or you could put yourself in a tight situation.

    Home Mortgage Guide

If you are comfortable with all of the answers to these questions, you may be ready to buy a home! Once you’re familiar with this guide and have an idea of what you’d like to spend and when, it’s time to start gathering information from mortgage providers. Most mortgage lenders provide information online that you can browse, but some require submitting an email address or phone number to request more information. The important thing is to gather as much information as possible to arm yourself for this big decision. We’ve done some of the leg work for you, but don’t just trust us. Check out our top mortgage providers and see for yourself.

Weight loss programs work best when they work for you. To reach and stay at a healthy weight over the long term, you must focus on your overall health and lifestyle habits, not just on what you eat. Successful weight-loss programs should promote healthy behaviors that help you lose weight safely, that you can stick with every day, and that help you keep the weight off.

Safe and successful weight-loss programs should include:

    • Lifestyle Coaching – which involves counseling or guides to healthier living
    • Whole Health Approach – sleep and stress can have a big impact on your success
    • Regular Feedback – monitoring success and progress towards goals is important
    • Slow and Steady – programs that offer too much too quit should be avoided

    Weight Loss Program Types

If you’re deciding what type of weight loss program is best for you, think about times that you successfully completed a goal in the past and try to remember what motivated you before. How much time do you have? Are you social or prefer to work independently? Do you have any physical ailments that will limit your ability to exercise?

    In-person weight loss programs

Typically these programs meet at community centers or storefronts and provide social support and coaching for a group of people trying to achieve the same goal. This can be very helpful for social people, but discouraging for people who prefer to work alone or feel self-conscious of their weight.

    Online weight loss programs

This is a good option if you are self-conscious about meeting in person, but also wish to benefit from social support. Use of forums, apps, and all kinds of technological means of communicating has made these programs popular and successful.

    Customizable weight loss programs

Customization comes in all forms. From diet plans to meal delivery programs all tailored to your ability to exercise or not.

    Packaged meal programs

Packed meal programs can be extremely helpful for busy people. Having a meal delivered right to your door is obviously convenient, and also make a big impact if you commit to not snacking in between scheduled meals.

People generally find the best results with programs that use a combination of the programs above for a whole-health approach to weight loss. Now it’s time to consider what’s going to work best for you.

What to look for when choosing a weight loss program?

Don’t be fooled by the fad diets or fly-by-night salesmen. Stick to the programs that work for others because statistically they’re more likely to work for you too. But it bears repeating, you must choose a program that is going to work with your workstyle and lifestyle. So be honest with yourself first, and then read on.

Lifestyle fit: Figure out whether a plan is compatible with your lifestyle before committing. Think about how much time and planning goes into each weight loss program. Some people find that meal planning and preparation takes up too much time, while others enjoy planning meals and spending time cooking and shopping for ingredients.

Diet restrictions vs. dietary needs: Look carefully if you have dietary restrictions. Most plans these days can accommodate a wide variety of food restrictions but it’s important to take a very careful look at these things if you have a food allergy.

Caloric intake: Some people naturally need more calories to keep them from feeling hungry. If you’re someone who suffers greatly when hungry, you may want to read the comments people who have taken the program before you.

Accessibility to foods: Some diet plans ship foods straight to your door, while others require you to shop for very particular ingredients. Consider whether the food allowed on a particular diet will fit into your budget and be relatively easy to find at grocery stores.

    Summary

Use our guide to get a better understanding of what you need and what might work for you. Then, take a look at our top picks and request some free information. Many companies offer specials for signing up that include free food, free memberships, and much more.

Is a Reverse Mortgage Right for You?

If you’re still unsure, talk to someone you trust or a certified counselor. Research different types of loans and request information from their providers, but always be wary and careful before signing anything.

    Stair Lift Buyers Guide:

    What is a Stair Lift?

All over the country and around the world, people are aging, and many of them are aging in place. There are all sorts of reasons, but it is by far the most commonly desired place to age (more than 90%, according to AARP) would prefer to remain at home for as long as possible. They would rather not transition to a senior care community unless or until it’s absolutely necessary.

But many seniors realistically sit between independence and the need for assistance. This is the primary reason that many long-distance caregivers and concerned family members worry about senior relatives or friends who either live alone, who are in poor/failing health, or live with a frail spouse who has care needs of his/her own.

stair lifts can help facilitate a more comfortable lifestyle for seniors who wish to stay in place.

People who Benefit from Stair Lifts

    People who can’t walk
People who cannot walk at all can benefit from stair lifts, as these devices allow them to move from floor to floor. Depending on the nature of their disability, these users may need assistance getting in and out of the stair lift. The devices were originally invented for polio sufferers, and people who can’t walk are one of the target markets for this type of device.

People who have trouble bending their knees: People who have trouble bending their knees will not be able to walk up and down steps easily. A perch seat or standing platform stair lift can help these people get from floor to floor with no trouble.

People who have limited mobility: People who have limited mobility, including needing a cane or walker to keep their balance, can benefit from the use of stair lifts so that they can safely move from floor to floor.

People with heart or lung issues: People with heart conditions, severe asthma or other medical issues that limit their ability to engage in physical activity might want to use a stair lift to minimize the health risk when going from floor to floor.

People who are obese: People who are obese may have trouble with mobility, joint pain, respiratory problems and balance issues and could be aided by a stair lift.

    Cost of a Stair Lift

Unfortunately, the cost of stair lifts prevent many seniors with fixed incomes from installing them. The irony however, is that senior care facilities or full-time caregivers are much more expensive. The trouble is, most people wait too long before installing a stair lift, so the option is no longer available.

Prices for stair lifts range from $999 to over $10,000, based on need and features desired. But there are a number of ways to pay for them, or get them paid for through other sources.

A reverse mortgage, second mortgage, or home improvement loan are also popular ways of financing the installation of a chair lift. Most people think that a reverse mortgage means losing the home, but it’s actually just a creative way to pull cash from the equity of a home.

Always check your health insurance policy first, you might have some options. Additionally, there are sometimes local grants or programs that can help seniors get funding for home updates for aging in place.

    Types of stair lifts

Once you’ve considered the costs, explored funding options, determined that your home can support this modification, and decided between renting and buying, the next big decision is choosing which stair lift is the best for your needs.

Full seated stair lifts: Most people think of full seated stair lifts when they think of a stair lift. These lifts contain a seat with a back and a footrest, both of which are usually adjustable. The user sits down and presses a button on the lift to raise or lower it.

Standing platforms: Users who have difficulty sitting, can’t bend their knees easily or prefer to stand may want to use a standing platform. This type of platform allows the user to stand up and hold onto the sides of the lift. These lifts are often narrower than full seated lifts.

Outdoor stair lift: Some stair lifts are specifically made for the outdoors. These lifts attach to wooden staircases so that users can access steps leading to their entryway or can get on and off decks and patios.

    Safety features

Stair lifts are equipped with a variety of safety features in order to ensure users that they don’t fall or injure themselves while using the device.

Safety sensors: Most stair lifts contain sensors that search for obstacles in the device’s path such as items left on the steps. The sensors automatically turn off the device and don’t allow movement until the obstacles are removed.

Aircraft or other strong cable: Cables are designed to hold up to 4,200 pounds so that they won’t snap or break while people are using the device.

Pressure-sensitive controls: Controls on the device itself are sensitive to pressure; if the user stops pressing the button, the lift immediately stops moving.

    Additional Features to Consider

    Remote control

Many stair lifts offer the option of a remote control to access the stair lift from far away.

Call lift to top or bottom of steps: If a user is on one floor and the stair lift is on the other, the user can call the lift to where it is needed by pressing a button on the remote control.

Save power: Users can save the stair lift’s power by turning it off via remote control when not in use.

Works in conjunction with device control: The device itself may have a joystick or button that controls the lift. The remote will not override this control and can only be used when the stair lift is not in operation.

Swivel ability: Most stair lifts allow the seat to swivel so that it can be turned by hand or turned while a person is sitting in it. Users can simply sit down in the seat and turn it in the direction they want to go. Then the stair lift can very easily be turned around so that it can go in the other direction.

    Adjustability

Most stair lifts allow users to quickly and easily adjust the seat.

Lever operated: Users might be able to raise or lower the seat by pressing a lever with their foot or hand.

Adjustable back and footrests: Users can adjust both the back of the device and the footrest for maximum comfort.

Folding seat: The seat can be folded back on some units to create a standing platform or a perch seat.

    Platform Options

Many stair lifts offer a variety of platform options to make them useful and enjoyable to a wide range of customers.

Sit/stand option: Users can fold the seat back to make a standing platform for those who would rather stand up while being transported up and down steps.

Perch seat: Those consumers who have difficulty with their knees may find it easier to get into a perch seat than into a standard seat.

Hinged platform: Hinged platforms allow the device to attach to stairs that are located inside a doorway or other narrow space.

    Rail Shape

Rails for stair lifts come in a variety of shapes and sizes so that they can accommodate all types of stairways.

Straight rails: Straight rails go straight up and down steps. These are designed for traditional flights of stairs.

Curved rails: Users can go up and down spiral or other curved stairways using these types of rails.

L-shaped rails: If a set of stairs suddenly turns at a 90 degree angle – as is popular in modern homes – L-shaped rails can allow a stair lift to travel over them.

How to Buy a Stair Lift

Do your research! Don’t trusted articles you read on the internet alone, make sure you talk to people who are non-biased, so don’t just trust everything that the stair lift salesman tells you. Get free information from multiple stair lift providers, and select a few that might work. At that point, request a home assessment from multiple companies to get a variety of estimates. Remember that all estimates are negotiable, and be on the lookout for scams or expensive warranties that you don’t need.

    Final Thoughts

We hope you found our stair lift guide and top picks helpful. Make sure you do your homework, and be careful of scams or greedy salesmen who pray on the elderly. For detailed reviews of popular chair lift products, please see our top editor picks.

    Walk-in Tub Overview

Walk-in tubs provide a safe, spa-like experience for seniors, people with mobility issues and anyone else who wants a more comfortable bath at home. Walk-in tubs provide safe, healthy living for people of all ages.

    Benefits of a Walk-in Tub

    Increases Safety

Seniors have much more to lose from a fall than a younger person. Even a small fall without a serious injury can cause a big drop in confidence, the loss of independence, and ultimately lead to rapidly declining hygiene and overall health.

Walk-in tubs bring safety features that dramatically reduce the chance of a fall:

    1. Anti-Slip Tub Floor –  Texture provides sure footing even when wet.
    2. Built-In Chair – No-slip seat is both comfortable and safe. ADA compliant.
    3. Quick Release Drain – Exit the tub quickly after a bath. No waiting for slow draining.
    4. Wide, No-Step Door – Extra-wide, low door for the obese and wheelchair-bound.
    5. Built-in Grab Bars – Provide a dependable handhold when entering and exiting tub.
    6. “Safe Water” Cleaning System – Easy way to keep your tub in great working order.
    7. Anti-Scald Technology – Keeps water warm while preventing accidental burns.
    8. Low-Step – Perfect for those with limited mobility and balance issues.
    9. In-Front Access Panels – Allows for quicker repairs if necessary.
    10. Aluminum Frame – Sold structure provides long-lasting durability.
    11. Interior Gel-Coat – Keeps tub sanitary and mold-free.

Reducing the risk of falling helps increase independence, and greatly improves quality of life.

    Relaxing and Soothing

These tubs give you a spa-like experience in the privacy of your own home. With relaxing jets, deeper water, and a more comfortable seating position, comfortable bathing has never been easier. The deeper tubs do take a bit more time to fill, up to 15 minutes, but the results are well worth the wait.

    Improves Health

Relaxation is great, but actual health benefits are better. The warm, bubbling water helps alleviate a variety of health issues including joint pain, arthritis, diabetes complications and more.

    Customizable for You

There’s a tub for practically any site, bathroom layout and budget. You can find a relatively low-cost tub with the basics or you can find something fancier for a bit more. Basically, all manufacturers offer a variety of styles, colors and design.

    Features

    1. Anti-Slip Tub Floor – Secure texture provides sure footing even when wet. See if you can feel the texture, as some extreme versions can cause scrapes to feet and knees.
    2. Built-In Chair – ADA compliant, no-slip seat is both comfortable and safe. An added feature for many tubs is a heated seat. Heated seats can make waiting for your tub to drain and fill a much more pleasant experience.
    3. Quick Release Drain – Since the coldest part of the bath is waiting for the tub to drain, a quick release can make a big difference to comfort. Many tub manufacturers can provide estimates on how quickly a tub can drain, but only a professional plumber can confirm that your plumbing can handle the volume.
    4. Wide, No-Step Door – Wider doors are useful to larger people and the wheelchair bound. It’s always a good idea to try the actual tub prior to buying. So make sure you can visit a salesroom floor to make sure you can comfortably enter and exit your tub.
    5. Built-in Grab Bars – Most grab bars are strategically placed to be maximally useful. However, people come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of fitness, so what works well for one person may not work well for another.
    6. Cleaning System – Makes sure that your tub is always clean and fresh. This reduces the need to get down and clean it extensively. Preventing mineral build up reduces the need to clean a walk in tub substantially, as dirt and debris do not stick to surfaces without mineral buildup as easily.
    7. Anti-Scald Technology – Scalding is a major danger for anyone who is filling up a tub while already inside. Temperature sensing technology can reduce the risk of scalding by controlling the temperature of the water coming out of the spigot.
    8. Low-Step – The lower the step, the easier it is for people with limited mobility to enter and exit the tub. Step height should always be an important consideration in your decision.
    9. In-Front Access Panels – Front access panels for maintenance and repairs can reduce the cost of ownership. If service technicians have easy access, they typically charge less money for repairs.
    10. Aluminum Frame – A lighter frame can reduce installation costs, and provide a sturdy, long lasting and corrosion resistant body for maximizing the lifespan of the tub and ensuring that it lasts as long as your house does.
    11. Interior Gel-Coat – Gel coatings are antimicrobial and reduce the chances of mold. These coatings can improve health and hygiene and require less upkeep.

    Installation

Installing a walk-in tub isn’t something you can tackle on your own. It involves framing, plumbing, electrical, tiling and more. Plumbers are great resources. So if you have a trusted plumber, they are great people to ask!

A plumber can often give you a non-biased opinion of features and companies, but many walk-in tub companies offer their own installation services. This is great for anyone who prefers to deal with only a few representatives, and have the entire process taken care of by professionals.

Unless you’re a plumbing professional, installing your walk-in bathtub isn’t a project you can do on your own. Safe installation involves plumbing, electrical, framing, tiling and more. Hiring the right installation team is an important part of the process.

An independent plumber is the cheaper option in 9 out of 10 cases. They’re also more likely to recommend the best tub with the features you need.

    How to buy

Do your research first! Once you’re knowledgeable on the basics of walk-in tubs, get some free quotes and request information from several reputable companies. You can compare features and prices to determine which combination works best for your life. If possible, check out a local showroom where you can try the tubs out dry. Our experts have assembled a list of the best walk-in tubs available to make it easier on you

  • Comparison Example

    Reviewer: Jane Doe | December 4, 2018
    Quick Read:
Home security is about peace-of-mind and safety, but you still want to get the most bang for your buck. Finding a modern and reliable home security systems with excellent support isn’t hard to do. There are plenty of easy-to-use, affordable systems out there, but it’s really about narrowing down the features, options and components to find what works best for you. From the hardware to the operating details and tech support, we’ve evaluated nine aspects to help you understand how to compare ratings and make the best choice.

    Editors Picks:

    What You Need to Know:

Each security system has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some rely completely on alarms within the home, while others rely on a silent alarm and/or a security service to monitor the status. Others are completely wireless or may require additional hardware. Some homeowners even monitor the audio and video from their home security systems on their smartphones from virtually anywhere. The only true constant across nearly all systems is the fact that homeowners can tailor the system to meet their individual needs, from casual observation or highly-detailed in-depth monitoring. The idea here is to understand the details of security systems as well as which companies offer the most value for the system that fits each homeowner’s needs.

Compare Our Top Home Security Picks for 2018 / 2019:

    Standard Features

Most security systems have many of the same standard features. The first thing is a central controller. This controller can accept inputs from a variety of wired and wireless devices such as motion detectors, video cameras, wired power, battery backup and a some type of alarm. Premium systems will also offer redundant wired and wireless communications to reach the monitoring company, fire and/or police dispatchers in an emergency. The redundant communications enable your system to work in a power outage or in the event your power and phone lines are cut.

Technically speaking, a security controller with a single wireless or wired motion detector and a 24/7 monitoring contract is a “complete” system, but it isn’t necessarily ideal. The additional features and services outlined below will be an important part of your decision.

    Wired or Wireless

Security systems come in wired or wireless version. Both rely on internet or phone connectivity to transfer information like silent alarms outside the household. Wireless systems are easier to install because they use less hardware, and are often more affordable for the same reason. That makes them perfect for a DIY job, but also means they have more potential to experience glitches like dropped signals because they aren’t hardwired in to the system.

    Smart Home Features

Nowadays, people can control just about every electronic item in the home with a mobile app, as long as they have a Smart home controller and numerous external devices. People can monitor and control lights, thermostats and video cameras from any mobile device. While these features are very common, they don’t necessarily need to be tied in with a security system, making it more expensive than it would be without those options.

Smart home technology is so common and inexpensive now that anyone can install Smart home devices that work with common mobile apps, including Google, Apple and Amazon voice control.

    Video Surveillance

There are numerous video surveillance options that range from simple doorbell monitoring by the homeowner to video transmission to a security service. Obviously, the more involved or “high-tech” the service or equipment, the higher the cost.

To save on costs, consider turnkey wireless video systems. They’re much easier to install DIY with the right basic skills. If flexible is your goal, wireless video is unmatched, but wired systems do boast a bit more reliability. The number of cameras also modifies the price; you can pick up a decent four-camera system can be purchased for under $500, whereas a security company is likely to charge much more for video.

    Extras / Options

Some options that can be included or added on to most security systems are a doorbell camera with two-way voice, automated door locks, light controls, energy management controls, voice response and remote garage control. These options offer convenience and consistency, but it’s really about how much the homeowner wants their system to do. For some, that amount of technology can be too overwhelming, while others desires that level of automation and/or technological control.

    Ease-Of-Use

Advanced technology doesn’t have to be difficult to use. New Smart security equipment can be controlled with just a touch, combining power and simplicity to make it easier for people to manage and control their systems from a distance. Mobile app integration provides easy access to monitoring equipment from virtually anywhere, letting users keep track of video monitoring and even interact with systems on the fly. These systems also keep users informed by sending out automatic texts or notifications if and when someone triggers the alarm. Systems with live video technology add another safety layer, giving the power to quickly check on pets or kids.

    Technical Support

Most top security systems consist of different components, some of which require professional installation and 24/7 monitoring. Even though security providers offer DIY options, it’s often a good idea to have systems installed, configured, and maintained by professionally trained technicians. Companies should provide technical support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day — with specialized services for emergencies, taking the maintenance burden off the homeowner.

    Installation

Do-It-Yourself installation is not available for most premium packages from security companies. Having a security system professionally installed ensures the entire installation is guaranteed and supported by the company’s tech support. When it comes to selecting wired or wireless options, wireless may be the way for renters to go. If the home can be serviced by wired connections and backed up by wireless connections, that’s typically the most reliable way to go.

    Choosing a Reputable Brand

There are so many security systems and options available that it can be difficult to narrow down the best option, but a few specific brands do stand out. Our favorite brand base on the combination of features, pricing, customer service, ease of use, customer reviews, brand reputation and durability are as follows:

  • The Truth About Cellulite

    The Truth About Cellulite

    Experts Were Wrong About Cellulite

Female Body Sculpting Expert, Joey Atlas is saving women from the pain, frustration and losses of thousands of dollars in wasted treatments.

Ask any woman on the street what the definition of “cellulite” is and you’ll get a confused variety of answers.

From “toxic fat pockets caught in the skin” to “bands of fiber pulling down on the skin” and many odd things in between…

The truth is: most people don’t know what “cellulite” actually is, or, what causes it.

Surprise, there is actually no such thing as “cellulite,” so how do we get rid of something which doesn’t exist?

    Here’s the answer:

The word, “cellulite”, was cleverly made-up several decades ago, in a European beauty-spa, to DESCRIBE the dimpled, shadowy and rippled appearance of skin on the butt, hips, thighs, belly, midriff, legs, etc…

The beauty spas then started cashing-in and profiting big-time by marketing “beauty” services and products to get rid of “cellulite”.

And if you’re like most women challenged by this issue, then you probably already know all of those passive and superficial treatments do not get rid of the dented shadows and mushy dimples on your body.

In order to make it smooth, tight and attractive, there are 5 steps to follow:

    Key #1:
You cannot get rid of the mushy dimples and saggy shadows by rubbing an odd gel, weird lotion or goopy cream on your trouble zones and problem spots. Since the squishy dimples, flabby ripples and shadows are a superficial symptom of a problem below the surface; it’s impossible for the creams, lotions or gels to have any physiological impact on the cause…

    Key #2:
Risky and expensive medical-spa treatments can only reduce your bank account – not your cellulite problems. And there are many consumer reports about women being seriously scarred or injured as well. Painful, dangerous and uncomfortable services ranging from endermologie to body-wrapping and cold laser therapy have been proven to be totally ineffective when it comes to treating cellulite.

    Key #3:
The unattractive dimples, mushy shadows and saggy ripples known as cellulite are not genetic and you are NOT stuck with them forever. Falsely believing this will prevent you from getting rid of your cellulite. So, don’t entertain this nonsense for one second. These myths are often passed around by neighborhood know-it-alls who also don’t know how to get rid of cellulite.

    Key #4:
You can get rid of cellulite, regardless of your age – or when you began to notice the dimples, shadows and ripples. Since cellulite is a structural issue (atrophied muscle) – it can be fixed with simple and unique body movements which target the problem areas.
